Margarita MarÃa de Santa Teresita Vargas Gaviria, known professionally as Margarita la Diosa de la Cumbia, was born on October 3, 1960, in MedellÃn, Colombia, and is a Colombian- Mexican singer of cumbia, bachata, boleros, vallenato, and tropical music. Her father, Félix Vargas, an executive at the RCN chain, was her first musical influence. At age 14, after her father's death, she began working various jobs to support her family. She started singing in local events and hotels, leading to her discovery by producer VÃctor Nanni of Sonora Dinamita. She joined the group in 1986, recording hits like "Oye", platinum in Mexico, and "La Cumbia del Sida". In 1990, she left Sonora Dinamita to pursue a solo career, releasing her album Una Historia...una Gran Mujer in 2001. She was recognized by the Colombian Senate with the Orden de Caballero in 2012 for her artistic contributions. In 2013, she performed at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, where she reunited with California's Latino audience after many years and recorded the live album Desde mis raÃces.
