Biography

Major Organ and the Adding Machine is a United States experimental pop project associated with the Elephant 6 collective and first active in 1997. Early contributors included musicians such as Jeff Mangum, Julian Koster, Robert Schneider, and Kevin Barnes. The project’s first issued recording was a cover of Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” on a Kindercore Records Christmas compilation in 1997. The self-titled album Major Organ and the Adding Machine was released in 2001 by Orange Twin Records. Performances associated with the project used paper masks and did not publicly identify performers. A companion film premiered in 2008, and an expanded album edition including the film on DVD was released in 2010.
