Mainzer Hofsänger, a semiprofessional male choir from Mainz, Germany, was founded in 1926 as Musik-Hochschul-Sänger. The group initially formed as a Fastnachts-Chor, consisting of members from the Extra-Chor of the Mainzer Konservatorium. The name was later changed to Mainzer Hofsänger while retaining the initials "MHS." Their first performances were at local Fastnacht events in and around Mainz, with their debut at the Mainzer Carneval-Verein in 1934. Post-World War II, they gained recognition for interpreting âSassaâ from Fred Raymondâs operetta Maske in Blau (1947) and âSo ein Tag, so wunderschön wie heuteâ¦â by Walter Rothenburg and Lotar Olias (1955). The latter became a hit, selling over 300,000 copies. In the 1960s, Mainzer Hofsänger embarked on concert tours across America and neighboring European countries. They also performed regularly on cruise ships and in various international venues. Their repertoire evolved from classical opera and operetta to include musicals, films, and modern pieces, with a focus on church and Christmas concerts. The choir is known for its politically themed Fastnachts performances and annual Christmas concert series. Mainzer Hofsänger received numerous awards, including the Rheingold-Plakette in Silber (1976), Dom Plakette (1976), Gutenberg-Plakette (1977), Peter-Cornelius-Plakette (1982), and Mainzer Medienpreis (2020). Notable albums include Stimmt an, lasst uns singen. 60 Jahre Mainzer Hofsänger (1986), Ein musikalischer Bilderbogen (1994), Mit Musik durchs ganze Leben (2001), and So ein Tag ⦠so wunderschön wie heute (2007).
