Biography
The Magic Lanterns are an English pop rock group formed in Warrington, Lancashire, in 1962. Initially known as The Sabres, they played locally in Manchester before changing their name and signing to CBS Records after releasing the single "Excuse Me Baby", which charted at number 44 in the UK in 1966. Their first album, Lit Up, followed shortly thereafter. In 1968, The Magic Lanterns switched to Atlantic Records and released their first US hit, "Shame, Shame", which peaked at umber 29 on the Hot 100 and achieved significant chart success in Canada. Despite a change in record labels to Big Tree Records in 1970, which saw the release of their second album One Night Stand, lead singer-songwriter Jimmy Bilsbury left to co-found The Les Humphries Singers with bandleader/songwriter Les Humphries. Other notable members included songwriter Albert Hammond and bassist Mike "Oz" Osborne. The Magic Lanterns had two more minor US hits, "One Night Stand" (1971) and "Country Woman" (1972).
