Lorraine Vaillancourt, CQ, is a Canadian pianist and conductor. She studied at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Québec and at the Ãcole Normale de Musique de Paris, where she worked with Pierre Dervaux. In 1970, she returned to the University of Montreal to study under Serge Garant. Vaillancourt joined the faculty of music at the University of Montreal in 1971, working closely with Bruce Mather and Serge Garant, and in 1974 became director of its contemporary music workshop. In 1989, she founded the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, the ensemble-in-residence at the universityâs faculty of music, which has received numerous awards. As a conductor, she has worked with major Canadian orchestras including the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Métropolitain, and others. From 1998 to 2001, Vaillancourt served as president of the Conseil québécois de la musique and later sat on the board of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. She is a member of the Royal Society of Canada and has received several distinctions including appointment as Knight of the National Order of Quebec (2018).
