Biography

Lorez Alexandria was an American jazz and gospel singer. She began her musical career singing gospel music in church choirs before entering the Chicago jazz club circuit, performing at venues such as the Brass Rail and the Cloister Inn and gaining early recognition in the local scene. In 1957, she signed with King Records and released her debut album This Is Lorez, followed by Lorez Sings Pres (1958). She later recorded for Argo Records, collaborating with pianist Ramsey Lewis and releasing albums including Early In The Morning (1960), Sing No Sad Songs for Me (1961), Deep Roots (1962), and For Swingers Only (1963). Alexandria moved to Los Angeles in 1964 and signed with Impulse! Records, where she released Alexandria The Great, followed by More Of The Great Lorez Alexandria later the same year. She later recorded for labels including Discovery, Trend, and Muse Records. Alexandria died on May 22, 2001, at the age of 74.
