Born on 20 January 1966 in London, England, Lewis Taylor is a UK multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer celebrated for his genre-defying approach to neo-soul. Emerging in the mid-1980s, first as Sheriff Jack, he gained recognition with two albums of neo-psychedeliaâLaugh Yourself Awake (1986) and What Lovely Melodies! (1987)âbefore setting his sights on soul music. Often compared to legends like Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield for his lush arrangements and emotive falsetto, he brought a fresh, experimental edge to contemporary soul music with his debut self-titled album as Lewis Taylor, released on Island Records in 1996. Despite critical acclaim and a devoted fanbase, he remained an enigmatic figure, carving out a cult following rather than mainstream success. His subsequent albums, including Lewis II and Stoned (parts I & II)âreleased in 2000 and 2004, respectivelyâfurther showcased his ability to fuse genres seamlessly, solidifying his status as an artistâs artist. Known for his meticulous craftsmanship, he played most of the instruments on his recordings, adding layers of authenticity to his work. Though he retreated from the public eye in later years, he re-emerged with the Numb album in 2022; his first new studio album in 17 years. Two years later, he released Pleasures Vol. 1, an album comprising a collection of covers such as "Summer Breeze" and "Rocket Man."
