Biography

Leonhard Lechner, born around 1553 in Etschtal, South Tyrol, was a German composer and kapellmeister of the late Renaissance. He studied under Orlande de Lassus as part of the Bavarian Hofkapelle, also known as the court chapel, in Munich from 1566 to 1570. After converting to Protestantism, Lechner settled in Nuremberg, releasing his first collection, Motectae Sacrae. In 1584, he became Kapellmeister by appointment of Eitel Friedrich IV, Count of Hohenzollern, but left due to disputes. He joined the Stuttgart court, serving as a tenor singer before becoming its court composer, kapellmeister, and eventually, musician at Stiftskirche. Lechner's works include "La Passion Selon Saint-Jean," "Missa Prima "Domine Dominus Noster." He passed away on September 9, 1606, in Stuttgart. A compilation album in his name titled Festive Mass & Motets was released in 2013.
