Biography

La Cédille, also known as Ça, is a French hip-hop, soul, and jazz ensemble from Besançon, formed in 1997. The group, consisting of seven members including the vocalists José Shungu and Abderrahmane Nimgharn, is recognized for its fusion of funk, acid jazz, and African music. They released their debut studio album, Vu du large, on 28 March 2005 through the English label Chocolate Fireguard Records. The 15-track recording highlights their use of live instrumentation, featuring a brass section with Jean-Marc Blanc on saxophone and Boris Pauthier on trombone. The group’s stage performances are characterized by a dynamic arrangement where each musician takes the forefront. La Cédille has shared stages with prominent international acts such as De La Soul, The Herbaliser, Jay Dee, Wax Tailor, and Brooklyn Funk Essentials. Their career includes extensive performances across France, England, Switzerland, and Quebec, notably appearing at the FrancoFolies de Montréal in 2006.
