Biography
Kalapana, an American pop-rock band from Honolulu, Hawaii, formed by childhood friends DJ Pratt and Malani Bilyeu. They began performing at local venues, opening for notable acts such as Earth, Wind & Fire. In 1975, Kalapana released their debut self-titled album, achieving significant success in Hawaii and Japan. Their second album, Kalapana II, was released in 1976, followed by a concert event at the Waikiki Shell that drew 25,000 attendees. The band won two Nani Awards for Best Performance by a Duo or Group and Best Male Vocalist (for Mackey Feary). Kalapana continued to release albums, including Kalapana III in 1977 and Many Classic Moments in 1978. In 1986, Kalapana reunited with a new lineup and recorded the album Hurricane, followed by tours across Asia and the Pacific. Mackey Feary, who had struggled with drug addiction, tragically took his own life on February 20, 1999.
