Born in Liverpool on June 18, 1942, Paul McCartney became a rock icon through his membership of The Beatles, the legendary band he joined in 1957 and remained with until their breakup in 1970. Singer, bassist, author and composer of a multitude of classics in tandem with John Lennon, he notably penned the standard "Yesterday " (1965). Learning to play several instruments led to his first solo album, McCartney (1970), before teaming up with his wife Linda McCartney to record Ram (1971), then forming the group Wings (1971-1980), which took him back to the top of the charts. Back on his own, he recorded McCartney II (1980), then, after John Lennon's assassination, Tug of War (1982), Pipes of Peace (1983) and the soundtrack to the film he directed and produced, Give My Regards to Broad Street (1984), as well as duets with Stevie Wonder ("Ebony & Ivory") and Michael Jackson ("This Girl Is Mine", "Say Say Say"). After a collaboration with Elvis Costello on Flowers in the Dirt (1987), a covers album(Choba C CCCP, 1989) and an acoustic session(Unplugged, 1991), the composer turned to classical music with Liverpool Oratorio (1991). From the melodic pop of Off the Ground (1992) to electronic experiments with producer Youth (Martin Glover) under the pseudonym The Fireman, Paul McCartney evolved without losing sight of his audience. He was knighted in 1997, and released the album Flaming Pie the same year, followed by the classic A Standing Stone and the rock'n'roll covers of Run Devil Run (1999). The death of Linda McCartney in April 1998, followed by induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1999), marked a new stage in the life and career of an artist adored the world over. Tours with loyal musicians alternate regularly with the release of albums Driving Rain (2001), Chaos and Creation in the Backyard (2005), Memory Almost Full (2007), Kisses on the Bottom (covers of jazz standards, 2012), New (2013) and Egypt Station (2018). Remarried successively to Heather Mills and Nancy Shevell, Mary and Stella McCartney's father took advantage of the period of confinement caused by the Covid-19 pandemic to record his third multi-instrumentalist album, McCartney III (2020). He takes part in the documentary Man on the Run (2026), retracing his years with Wings, from which the soundtrack Man on the Run: Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack is taken.
