Jules Anton Deelder (born Julius Anton Deelder, November 24, 1944 – December 19, 2019) was a Dutch poet, spoken word artist, and writer from Rotterdam. Known by the nickname “night mayor of Rotterdam”, Deelder discovered jazz in 1954 after hearing Chet Baker. Deelder was recognized for his live performances and regular appearances in Dutch popular media. Deelder collaborated with musicians including Herman Brood, Benjamin Herman, and Bas van Lier to record and perform his poetry. His discography featured theatre show recordings such as Deelder Speaks (1986) and Kiezen Of Deelder (1990). In 1993, he released the collection of music and poetry Deelder Drumt Jazz, followed by the hit single “Oh Kut” with Herman Brood in 1997. Between 2002 and 2006, Deelder curated a series of jazz compilations titled Deelder Draait. He released the albums Totaal Loss (2011) and De Deeldeliers (2013). Deelder hosted the radio program Deelder Draait on Arrow Jazz FM and wrote scripts for various comic books. He received the Anna Blaman Prijs in 1988. Deelder died in Rotterdam.
