Juca Chaves, born Jurandyr Czaczkes Chaves in Rio de Janeiro on October 22, 1938, was a Brazilian singer-songwriter, humorist, and composer known for blending sharp satire with refined musicality. Raised in a musical family and trained in classical music, he began composing as a child and launched his career in the late 1950s performing modinhas and trovas. By the 1960s, he was already a well-known figure in Brazil, creating the famous Sdruws circus-show and earning the nickname "Menestrel Maldito" from VinÃcius de Moraes for his bold, ironic style. A vocal critic of Brazilâs military dictatorship and social elite, Juca Chaves faced exile in Portugal and later Italy, where he continued recording, including albums like As Duas Faces de Juca Chaves (1960), O Brasil Já Vai à Guerra (1960), and Ninguém Segura este Nariz (1974). His signature songs, such as "Caixinha, Obrigado", "Por Quem Sonha Ana Maria", "Take me Back to PiauÃ", and "Presidente Bossa Nova", became classics, mixing humor with poignant commentary. Later in his career, he launched the independent label Sdruws Records and maintained cultural relevance with satirical works like "Adeus em ritmo de Lava Jato" (2015). Juca Chaves passed away on March 25, 2023, but left an indelible mark as one of Brazilâs sharpest musical satirists.
