John Samuel Waters Jr., known as John Waters, was born on April 22, 1946, in Baltimore, Maryland. He is an American filmmaker, actor, comedian and writer. At age 16, his grandmother gifted him a camera, sparking his interest in filmmaking. John Waters dropped out of New York University due to boredom with his studies and began creating films in the 1960s. Waters' breakthrough came with controversial films like Pink Flamingos (1972), which earned him an obscenity fine. He continued to push boundaries with films such as Female Trouble (1974) and Desperate Living (1977). In the 1980s, John Waters gained wider recognition with Polyester, the first film in "odorama" format, and Hairspray, which marked a shift towards more mainstream audiences while retaining his signature caustic humor. His work has been featured at prestigious events like the Cannes Film Festival and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). He also recorded spoken word projects, including Make Trouble (2017), Prayer to Pasolini (2021), It's in the Book (2022), and singles "Jingle Bells" b/w " It's a Punk Rock Christmas (2024), and "Little Cindy" b/w "A Pig Latin Visit from St. Nicolas" (2025), which reached number 10 on the UK Physical Singles Sales chart.
