Biography

With his bright red hair and confrontational glare, John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten) became the iconic face of British punk. The son of working class Irish immigrants to London, Lydon spread Anarchy in the UK as the snarling front man of rock legends the Sex Pistols before dabbling with industrial, dub and all manner of experimental sounds with the influential post-punk group Public Image Ltd (PiL). His eclectic tastes led him to work with hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa and 1990s dance act Leftfield, and his debut solo album Psycho's Path (1997) featured remixes by the Chemical Brothers, Moby and Danny Saber. Attempting to mix electronica with spiky, alt rock guitars, the album failed to make much of an impact and Lydon took solace in reunion shows with the Sex Pistols. In later years he also reformed PiL, but is probably better known for advertising Utterly Butterly, walking off ITV reality show I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here and becoming something of a grumpy old national treasure.
