John Leventhal, born on December 18, 1952, is an American musician, producer, songwriter, and recording engineer. In 1988, he co-wrote and produced Shawn Colvinâs debut album Steady On, which won a Grammy. He played a key role in Marc Cohn's 1991 hit Walking in Memphis. In 1997, he won Grammys for Record and Song of the Year for Colvinâs Sunny Came Home.
Throughout the 2000s, Leventhal continued working with artists like Rosanne Cash, producing her 2014 album The River & the Thread, which won three Grammys. His 2016 collaboration with William Bell, This Is Where I Live, won the Grammy for Americana Album of the Year. In 2021, Sarah Jaroszâs World on the Ground, produced by Leventhal, won Best Americana Album.
He has composed film scores and was named the Americana Music Associationâs Instrumentalist of the Year in 2015. In 2024, he released his debut album Rumble Strip.
