Biography

John Gary, born John Gary Strader on November 29, 1932, in Watertown, New York, was an American singer. He began his musical journey at age five and won a three-year scholarship to the Cathedral School of St. John in Manhattan at nine. Gary's early career included performances with Frank Pursley and appearances on local television shows such as Midday on WDSU-TV in New Orleans. His breakthrough came when he signed with RCA Victor, leading to his nomination for a 1964 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. Throughout the 1960s, Gary released numerous albums, including So Tenderly and The John Gary Christmas Album, and had five songs chart on Billboard's adult contemporary list, with "Cold" reaching Number 1 in 1967. He also appeared frequently on television shows like The Tonight Show and performed at Carnegie Hall. John Gary served in the United States Marine Corps and continued to perform extensively until his death from cancer on January 4, 1998, in Dallas, Texas.
