Biography

American pianist John Browning was born in Denver, Colorado in 1933. After completing his musical education he went on to become one of the most popular classical performers of his day. Like many formally trained US musicians, Browning attended Juilliard School in New York where he was mentored by Rosina Lhévinne. In 1955 he won the prestigious Leventritt Competition and made his professional debut with the New York Philharmonic, signalling the start of Browning's successful career as a concert pianist. At the peak of his popularity Browning would give over 100 concerts per year and became known for his thoughtful interpretations of Bach, Haydyn, Mozart and Scarlatti, invariably played with great sensitivity and skill. He was a prolific recording artist managed throughout most of his career by the well known publicist and agent Herbert Barrett. Browning died from heart failure in 2003 at the age of 69.
