Johan de Meij, born Johannes Abraham de Meij on November 23, 1953 in Voorburg, Netherlands, is a Dutch composer and conductor. He began his musical career at age 15 as a trombonist with the Harmonie Forum Hadriani. De Meij's breakthrough came in 1988 when his first symphony The Lord of the Rings was premiered by the Grand Harmonie Orchestra of the Belgian Royal Guides, conducted by Norbert Nozy. The symphony, inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, won the prestigious Sudler International Composition Award in Chicago in 1989. De Meij has since composed numerous works, including The Big Apple (1993), Casanova (2000), and Planet Earth (2006).
