Biography

JJ Grey & Mofro is a southern roots-rock band fronted by songwriter John Higginbotham, also known as "JJ Grey." Higginbotham and Daryl Hance both grew up near Jacksonville, Florida, where they co-founded the group in 1998. Blackwater, the band's debut album, was released in 2001, followed by Lochloosa in 2004. From the start, JJ Grey & Mofro's swampy sound featured an ever-evolving mix of blues, soul, funk, and southern rock, and the band's lineup was similarly fluid, with members coming and going with each new release. Hance made his own departure in 2010, leaving the group's roster to launch a solo career shortly before JJ Grey & Mofro commenced recording sessions for their sixth album, Georgia Warhorse. The band continued to forge ahead under Higginbotham's leadership, building an audience not only with heavy touring, but also with records like 2011's Brighter Days, 2013's This River, and 2015's Ol' Glory. After a lengthy break from the recording studio, JJ Grey & Mofro returned in 2024 with the self-produced Olustee, whose songs showcased an expanded band that now included horn players and string instrumentalists. "Wonderland," the record's lead single, was a hit on the Top 40 Radio Adult Alternative Songs chart, where it debuted at number 37 that spring.
