Chiel Thomas Ottink, known professionally as Thomas Berge, was born on January 25, 1990, in Haaksbergen, Netherlands. He began his music career at a young age, releasing his first single at twelve, Mijn Luchtballon, which sold 800,000 promotional copies. In 2005, Berge received the Zilveren Harp, the most prestigious award for promising new talent in The Netherlands. He released his self-titled album Thomas Berge in 2003, followed by Als jij lacht (2005), and De mooiste (2005). In 2007, he appeared on the television program Stars Dancing on Ice and recorded "De stem van mijn hart" with uunior contest participant Tess Gaerthé. His single "Zonder jou" entered the Dutch top 10 in 2008, followed by "Ieder moment", which peaked at number 4. Berge's first gold single in The Netherlands was "Kon ik maar even bij je zijn".
