Biography

William Jermaine Stewart, born September 7, 1957, in Columbus, Ohio, is an American singer. He began his entertainment career as a dancer on Soul Train after moving to Chicago in 1972, where he met fellow dancers Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniel, who were later selected for the group Shalamar. Stewart toured with them before meeting Mikey Craig of Culture Club, which led to his recording contract with Arista Records. Stewart's debut album The Word Is Out was released in 1984, however his breakthrough came with the 1986 album Frantic Romantic, featuring the hit single "We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off", which peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached the top ten in several countries. Subsequent albums included Say It Again (1987) and What Becomes a Legend Most (1989). Stewart died of an AIDS-related liver cancer on March 17, 1997, in Homewood, Illinois. In 2011, "We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off" was featured in a Cadbury advertisement, reintroducing the song to a new generation and peaking at number 29 on the UK Singles Chart.
