Biography

Jehan de Lescurel was a late 13th to early 14th-century French composer-poet known for his contributions to late medieval music. Little was known about his early life, but it was inferred that he received musical training at Notre Dame de Paris. Jehan de Lescurel's compositions included 34 works: 20 ballades, 12 rondeaus, and two long narrative poems called diz entés. His music was significant as an example of the formes fixes before the time of Guillaume de Machaut and represented a transitional period from the trouvère tradition to the polyphonic ars nova style. Jehan de Lescurel's works were primarily monophonic songs, with only one polyphonic piece surviving. Notable posthumous releases include Fontaine De Grace (1995) and The Love Songs of Jehan de Lescurel (2016).
