Biography

Jörgen van Rijen is a Dutch classical trombonist born on February 20, 1975, in Dordrecht. He established a musical background at age eight, later studying at the Rotterdam Conservatory and the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon. After performing with the Rotterdam Philharmonic, Van Rijen became principal trombone of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1997. His professional career featured the 2003 founding of the New Trombone Collective and an appointment as Professor of Trombone at the Amsterdam Conservatory. Van Rijen received the Netherlands Music Prize in 2004 and the Borletti Buitoni Trust Award in 2006. His recording history included the debut solo album First Chairs of the Concertgebouw Orchestra, Vol. 1 (2005) and subsequent projects Sackbutt (2008) and I was like WOW! (2009). His other featured premieres of commissioned works include Theo Verbey’s “LIED” (2007) and James MacMillan’s Trombone Concerto (2017).
