Biography
The JanáÄek Quartet, a Czech string quartet, was founded in 1934 in Brno from players of the Radio Orchestra and the Provincial Theatre. Initially known as the Jamu Quartet, they focused on chamber works by LeoÅ¡ JanáÄek and later renamed themselves after the composer in 1949. The quartet became known for their practice of performing without sheet music and a unique playing style. The ensemble gained international recognition in 1955 following tours and a concert in West Berlin. Their recordings have earned awards such as the Grand Prix of the Charles Cros Academy and the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik.
