Biography

Jan & Kjeld, a Danish music duo consisting of brothers Jan Wennick and Kjeld Wennick, were born on July 27, 1946, in Copenhagen, Denmark, and February 3, 1944, in Gränna, Sweden respectively. Jan & Kjeld gained initial recognition by winning several singing competitions in Denmark, leading to appearances on radio and television. In 1959, they signed with Ariola Records and released their debut single "Tiger Rag", which charted in Germany. Their breakthrough came later that year with the release of debut album Banjo Boy, which topped the German charts and earned them a gold record and the "Bronzenen Löwen" award from Radio Luxemburg. Throughout the early 1960s, Jan & Kjeld released several successful albums, including With a Banjo on My Knee (1961) featuring "Viele Bunte Lichter" (1961) The duo's career began to wind down by 1964 however Jan & Kjeld continued to perform their old hits at nostalgia shows during the 1970s and 1980s, releasing Tingelingeling, My Banjo Sings in 1966. After Jan Wennick retired from show business, Kjeld Wennick founded Mega Records in 1983 and later sold his music publishing company to Edel Records in 2001. Kjeld Wennick passed away on May 31, 2020.
