Biography
Born in Jacksonville, Florida in 1946, Jackie Moore was a southern soul vocalist best known for her 1970 hit âPrecious, Preciousâ. She grew up as a fan of soul artists such as Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight and chose to follow music as a career. She relocated to Philadelphia, eventually signing to the independent Shout label. Her musical career began in 1968 when she released the single âDear Johnâ. After two further singles on Shout â âWhy Donât You Call on Meâ and âLoser Againâ â she caught the attention of Atlantic Records, who signed her to their roster. In late 1970, Moore released the single âPrecious, Preciousâ, which reached Number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and Number 12 on the R&B Singles chart in March of 1971. She reached the R&B Top 20 with her next single, âSometimes Itâs Got to Rain (In Your Love Life)â (with The Dixie Flyers) but didnât release her debut album, Sweet Charlie Babe, until 1973. The album rose to the Number 45 spot on the R&B Albums chart. Her next album, Make Me Feel Like a Woman, was released on the Kayvette label in 1975. Moore signed with Columbia Records and released her third album, Iâm on My Way, in 1979. The album was influenced by the then-popular disco movement and included the hit single âThis Time Babyâ, which hit the Number 1 spot on the U.S. Dance chart. In 1980, she released her fourth album, With Your Love. In the early 1980s, she released a handful of singles before retiring from the music business to focus on her family. Jackie Moore died on November 8, 2019 at the age of 73.
