Iyah May (stylised as iyah may), born Marguerite Clark in Cairns, Queensland and formerly known as Mayah, is an Australian pop singer. At an early age, she developed a passion for artists such as Lauryn Hill, TLC, Massive Attack, and Moby. While studying medicine at James Cook University, she moved to New York City in 2015, where she immersed herself in the local jazz and blues scene and took classes with vocal coach Craig Derry. A chance encounter led her to perform at rapper Shaggy's house, marking the beginning of her musical journey. After completing her medical degree in 2016, she returned to Australia and continued her music career under various stage names, including Mae Brooks and Mayah. She gained recognition by winning the Pop category in the 2017 United Kingdom Songwriting Contest with "Something Sweet" and the R&B category with "XO Girl." In 2019, she adopted the stage name iyah may and released her debut single "Pray" via Island Records Australia, followed by "Tied You Up." Her single "XO Girl," featuring Saint Lane, premiered on Triple J in April 2021. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she returned to medicine, working on the frontlines as a hospital intern. Her experiences during this time deeply influenced her music, leading to the creation of 2024 single "Karmageddon," a protest song addressing political division, media manipulation, corporate greed, and public apathy. The song's controversial lyrics led to her parting ways with her manager and record label, but it resonated with audiences, reaching number two on the Australian iTunes chart and charting all over the world, including in the UK where it went to number 44 on the Top 100 Singles Sales Official chart.
