Samuel Moore, known professionally as Ironing Board Sam, was born on July 17, 1939, in Rock Hill, South Carolina. He was an American electric blues keyboardist, singer, and songwriter who began his musical journey playing the pump organ at a young age. In 1959, Moore moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he formed a band and adopted his stage name due to his unconventional method of strapping his legless keyboard to an ironing board for performances. He was backed by a young Jimi Hendrix in 1962 and released several singles for labels like Atlantic, Styletone, and Holiday Inn during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Moore's performing technique was notable for its eccentricity, including inventions like the "button keyboard" and a famous 1979 performance inside a 1,500-gallon water tank at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. He released his debut album Human Touch in 1996 and joined the Music Maker Relief Foundation in 2010. Moore released several more albums, including Double Bang (2013) and Super Spirit (2015). He returned to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in 2012 and 2014.
