Charlemagne Palestine, born Charles Martin on August 15, 1947, in Brooklyn, New York, is an avant-garde musician and artist primarily recognized for his minimalist compositions and multimedia performances. His innovative work includes Four Manifestations on Six Elements (1973) and Strumming Music (1974), among others, where he explores sustained sounds and overtones creating immersive soundscapes. Charlemagne Palestine's journey into music began in a Jewish choir, leading to his role as a carillonneur at St. Thomas Church in Manhattan. This experience laid the groundwork for his signature "Golden Sound." He delved into electronic music with the advent of synthesizers, notably the Buchla 100 and 200, under the mentorship of Morton Subotnick. After relocating to San Francisco, his fascination with the BÃ¶sendorfer piano's harmonic richness led to the development of a unique playing technique.
