Iancu Dumitrescu, born on July 15, 1944, in Sibiu, Romania, was a Romanian composer known for his work in classical music. He completed his composition studies at the Conservatoire de Bucharest in 1968 under Alfred Mendelsohn and later pursued courses in phenomenology and orchestral conducting at the University of Trèves with Sergiu Celibidache from 1978 to 1981. Dumitrescu founded the Hyperion Ensemble in 1976, dedicated to experimental music. His discography includes notable albums such as Ansamblul Hyperion (1981), Romanian Contemporary Music (1982), and Grande Ourse / Aulodie MioriticÄ (Gamma) (1985). Dumitrescu's work is characterized by its hyper-spectral, acousmatic, transformational, and phenomenological qualities. He also founded and directed several international music festivals, including Acousmania, Musica Nova, Musica Viva, and Spectrum XXI. His compositions span various genres, from solo instruments to orchestral works, and have been released on multiple labels such as Edition Modern - ReR Megacorp (London) and Electrecord (Bucharest).
