Horacio Gutiérrez, born August 28, 1948, in Havana, Cuba, is a Cuban-American pianist. He began playing piano at four years old and performed as a soloist with the Orquesta Sinfónica de La Habana at 11. In 1961, he moved to the United States and studied under Sergei Tarnowsky and Adele Marcus. His breakthrough came in 1970 performing Rachmaninoff's "Piano Concerto No. 3" with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Zubin Mehta. Gutiérrez won the silver medal at the 1970 International Tchaikovsky Competition and received the Avery Fisher Prize in 1982. He has collaborated with prominent orchestras and conductors such as Lorin Maazel and André Previn, and his discography include recordings for EMI, Telarc, and Chandos Records. Gutiérrez also taught at the Manhattan School of Music.
