Biography
The Hillmen, a southern Californian bluegrass group, formed in 1962 with Vern Gosdin on guitar and lead vocals, his brother Rex Gosdin on double bass, Hal Poindexter on guitar, and Don Parmley on banjo. The original lineup evolved when Chris Hillman replaced Poindexter on mandolin later that year. The group changed their name to the Blue Diamond Boys briefly before settling on The Hillmen. They played regularly in southern California between 1962 and 1964, gaining attention through television appearances and recordings produced by Jim Dickson at World Pacific Studios. Despite efforts to secure a contract with Elektra Records, the group disbanded by mid-1964. Their recorded material was eventually released as The Hillmen album in 1969 on Together Records. Following the breakup, Chris Hillman joined The Byrds, while other members pursued various musical endeavors.
