Biography

Helmut Walcha was a distinguished German organist and harpsichordist who specialized in the works of the Dutch and German masters. Despite losing his sight at age 19, he graduated from the Leipzig Conservatory and served as an assistant at the Thomaskirche. After moving to Frankfurt, he became a professor at the Musikhochschule in 1938 and served as the organist at the Dreikönigskirche starting in 1946. Walcha achieved international acclaim for his monumental recordings of the complete organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach, documented in his Bach: The Organ Works (1947–1952) and the later stereo cycle (1956–1971). A respected composer, his 25 Chorale Preludes (1954) remain a staple of the repertoire. Walcha retired in 1981, leaving a legacy of structural clarity and rigorous scholarship that continues to influence historical performance practice.
