Biography

Indie Korean singer and songwriter Hello Ga-Young was born Baek Ga-young in Busan, South Korea on October 23, 1987. Her professional career began in earnest when she joined the group Joa Band as a bassist. Rare for Korean pop acts, they wrote their own material, and it was in that band that her first songs were released. She ended the relationship with the band in 2013, formed her own record label, and released her debut single “A Song for Old Lovers”. Her debut EP, Opponent Process Theory, dropped one year later. Her debut LP, Those Moments, hit number 67 on the Korean charts, but reached number 2 on the indie chart with her blend of pop and folk. The single “Sleepless Summer Night” from that album inspired Hello Ga-Young to write and publish a collection of short stories. That project inspires her 2017 EP Collection of Short Stories – Almost Like Missing You. The 2019 LP something special produced two more singles that, like all of her previous solo work, she composed herself. She maintained a steady flow of new singles including 2019’s “tease me”, 2020’s It’s the sun that’s sinking, it’s not you”, and 2021’s “Spring Is Gone By Chance (2021)”.
