Indie Korean singer and songwriter Hello Ga-Young was born Baek Ga-young in Busan, South Korea on October 23, 1987. Her professional career began in earnest when she joined the group Joa Band as a bassist. Rare for Korean pop acts, they wrote their own material, and it was in that band that her first songs were released. She ended the relationship with the band in 2013, formed her own record label, and released her debut single âA Song for Old Loversâ. Her debut EP, Opponent Process Theory, dropped one year later. Her debut LP, Those Moments, hit number 67 on the Korean charts, but reached number 2 on the indie chart with her blend of pop and folk. The single âSleepless Summer Nightâ from that album inspired Hello Ga-Young to write and publish a collection of short stories. That project inspires her 2017 EP Collection of Short Stories â Almost Like Missing You. The 2019 LP something special produced two more singles that, like all of her previous solo work, she composed herself. She maintained a steady flow of new singles including 2019âs âtease meâ, 2020âs Itâs the sun thatâs sinking, itâs not youâ, and 2021âs âSpring Is Gone By Chance (2021)â.
