Headless Chickens was a New Zealand rock band formed in 1985. The group, known for their innovative use of electronic instruments and sampling, emerged from the Dunedin music scene but diverged from the typical sound associated with Flying Nun Records. Their breakthrough came in 1987 when they won the Rheineck Beer Rock award, which funded their debut album Stunt Clown, released in 1988. This album featured extensive sampling and was notable for its electronic elements. The band's second album, Body Blow (1991), marked a significant milestone with the hit single "Cruise Control", which became popular in both New Zealand and Australia. The revised version of Body Blow, released in 1993, went double platinum in New Zealand. The band's third studio album, Greedy (1997), included the Number 1 hit single "George" in their home country. Following the release of Greedy, Headless Chickens disbanded. In 2002, Flying Nun Records released a best-of compilation titled ChickensHits. The band reformed in 2008 for several concerts but disbanded again after these performances. Bassist Grant Fell passed away on January 27, 2018.
