Biography

Harold Herman Schaefer, known professionally as Hal Schaefer, was an American jazz pianist and vocal coach, born on July 22, 1925, in New York City. Early in his career, Schaefer played with notable bands including those led by Stan Kenton, Benny Carter, and Dave Barbours' Four of a Kind. He also performed with the big bands of Harry James and Boyd Raeburn. In 1955, his debut album was recorded as part of the Jazz Workshop sessions at RCA Victor. Throughout the 1960s, he contributed to film scores, including music for Sidney Lumet's thriller Target Moscow. In the 1990s, he resumed recording under his own name, releasing albums like Solo Duo Trio (1992) and a tribute album for Marilyn Monroe's 75th birthday in 2000. Schaefer was nominated for the National Endowment for the Arts' Jazz Masters Fellowship in 2009. He passed away on December 8, 2012, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
