Gypsy, an American progressive rock band from Minnesota, was formed in 1962 as The Underbeats. The group's breakthrough moment came when they became the house band at the Whisky a Go Go in West Hollywood, California, from September 1969 to April 1971. During this period, Gypsy gained recognition for their US Billboard Hot 100 single "Gypsy Queen Part 1", which peaked at number 62 in 1970. The band released several albums during their active years, including Gypsy (1970), In the Garden (1971), Antithesis (1972), and Unlock the Gates (1973). Notable songs from these releases include "Dead And Gone" and "As Far As You Can See, As Much As You Can Feel / Here (In The Garden) Part II". Gypsy disbanded in 1975. Keyboardist James Walsh continued the band's legacy with various incarnations as The James Walsh Gypsy Band, which had a Hot 100 entry in 1978 with "Cuz, It's You Girl" peaking at number 71. Drummer Bill Lordan went on to play with Sly & the Family Stone and later had a long career with Robin Trower.
