Biography
The Group for Contemporary Music, an American chamber ensemble dedicated to contemporary classical music, was founded in New York City on October 22, 1962, by Joel Krosnick, Harvey Sollberger, and Charles Wuorinen. The group gave its first concert at Columbia University's MacMillin Theatre and was the first contemporary music ensemble based at a university and run by composers. Initially supported by the Alice M. Ditson Fund of Columbia, the group later received backing from various foundations and public sources. Notable early supporters included Edgard Varese and Aaron Copland. The ensemble recorded extensively for labels like CRI, RCA Victor, New World, Koch, and Naxos, with notable releases including Feldman's String Quartet (2006).
