Paula Morelenbaum was born Regina Paula Martins Morelenbaum on July 31, 1962, in Rio de Janeiro. She was exposed to bossa nova from childhood through her father and began her professional career in 1980 with the vocal ensemble Céu da boca. Morelenbaum gained international recognition as a member of Antônio Carlos Jobimâs Nova Banda from 1984 until 1994, performing alongside her husband, cellist Jaques Morelenbaum. She released her self-titled debut solo album, Paula Morelenbaum, in 1992, which won a Sharp Music Award Brazil in 1994. She later formed the Quarteto Jobim-Morelenbaum and the trio Morelenbaum²/Sakamoto with Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto. Her discography includes the 2001 album Casa, recorded at Jobim's former home, and the 2004 release Berimbaum, which served as a tribute to poet Vinicius de Moraes. Morelenbaum continued her exploration of Brazilian music with the 2008 album Telecoteco and the 2009 collaboration Bossarenova. She has toured extensively in Europe and South America.
