Gordon Staples, an American violinist born in the United States, began his career as a concertmaster for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. His breakthrough came through his work with Motown Records during the 1960s, where he served as the leader and conductor of the string section on numerous recording sessions. Although not a household name like Motown's singers, Staples' contributions were heard by millions worldwide through his involvement in hundreds of hit records. In 1970, he released Strung Out, an album credited to Gordon Staples and the String Thing, featuring members of the Funk Brothers.
