Biography
George Guest, born in 1924 in Bangor, Gwynedd, was a Welsh organist and choral conductor. He began his musical journey as a chorister at Bangor Cathedral and later at Chester Cathedral, where he took organ lessons from Dr. Roland Middleton. In 1951, Guest became the organist and choirmaster at St John's College, Cambridge, succeeding Robin Orr. Under his direction, the choir built up a formidable reputation, challenging the supremacy of the choir of King's College, Cambridge. The choir began broadcasting on the BBC in the early 1950s and started making recordings in 1958. Guest's tenure saw the choir record sixty LPs or CDs and undertake many overseas tours. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1987. George Guest passed away in 2002.
