Biography

Göteborgs Symfoniker, a Swedish symphony orchestra based in Gothenburg, was founded in 1905 with Heinrich Hammer as its first principal conductor. The orchestra's early years saw significant contributions from composers such as Wilhelm Stenhammar and notable guest conductors like Jean Sibelius and Carl Nielsen. In the 1980s, under the leadership of Neeme Järvi, who served as principal conductor from 1982 to 2004, Göteborgs Symfoniker gained international recognition. During this period, the orchestra released numerous albums, including The Music For Piano & Orchestra / Prelude, Chorale & Fugue (1979) and Symphony In C Minor / Overture "In Autumn" (1982). Subsequent principal conductors included Gustavo Dudamel from 2007 to 2012 and Santtu-Matias Rouvali from 2017 to 2025.
