Biography

Gaetano Pugnani was born on November 27, 1731 in Turin, Italy. He joined the orchestra at the Teatro Regio di Torino at age ten and later the royal chapel in Turin in 1748. Trained by Giovanni Battista Somis and Pasquale Bini, Pugnani performed at Paris's Concert spirituel in 1754. From 1767 to 1769, he served as concertmaster at London's King’s Theatre, collaborating with Johann Christian Bach and Karl Friedrich Abel. His opera Nanetta e Lubino premiered during this period. Returning to Turin in 1770, Pugnani established his own music school and taught notable students such as Giovanni Battista Viotti. His compositions include several sonatas, triosonaten, duets, symphonies, and operas. He died on July 15, 1798.
