Biography

Furacão 2000, a production company and record label founded in Rio de Janeiro by Rômulo Costa and Gilberto Guarani, emerged from the merger of Som 2000 and Guarani 2000 in the 1970s and became a pivotal force in popularizing funk carioca throughout Brazil during the 1990s. The group’s early efforts focused on organizing soul, funk, and disco dance events, which laid the groundwork for its subsequent studio work. In the late 1990s, Furacão 2000 released the compilation 27 Anos Nacional, followed by the series Tornado Muito Nervoso, Tornado Muito Nervoso 2, and Tornado Muito Nervoso 3, each consolidating the group’s presence on local charts and establishing a signature sound that blended Miami Bass influences with Brazilian rhythms. The 2000s saw a succession of releases including the Tsunami albums-Tsunami, Tsunami II, and Tsunami III-and the compilation Clássicos do Funk, Vol. 1, which together captured the peak of the genre’s mainstream appeal. In 2010, the label issued Armagedon, followed by Armagedon II, Vol. 1 and Armagedon III in subsequent years, while Infinity Power in 2013 and Sensibilidade Vol. 2 in 2021 expanded the catalog into contemporary funk and rap territories. Throughout its career, Furacão 2000 secured multiple chart placements, earned industry recognition for its role in shaping Brazilian funk, and maintained a legacy that continues to influence new artists within the genre.
