Biography
Friedrich Wührer, born June 29, 1900 in Vienna, Austria, was an Austrian-German pianist. He began his piano studies at age six and later studied at the Vienna Academy under Franz Schmidt. His performing career started in the early 1920s, touring Europe and the United States in 1923. Wührer made his Salzburg Festival debut in 1938 and was known for advocating modern works. His recorded legacy focuses on German romantic literature, particularly the music of Franz Schubert, including one of the earliest nearly complete cycles of Schubert's piano sonatas released during the early LP era. He also taught at various institutions, including the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim (University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim) and the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Munich (University of Music and Theater Munich). Wührer died on December 27, 1975, in Mannheim.
