Biography

Forest City Joe was an American blues musician and singer-songwriter who was born as Joe Bennie Pugh in Hughes, Arkansas, in 1926. He achieved early professional recognition in the 1940s while touring Arkansas and is famous for his ability as a harmonica player and for his membership in the first band led by Muddy Waters. Pugh was raised on a cotton farm and was heavily influenced by the style of John Lee “Sonny Boy” Williamson. In 1947, he adopted his stage name and relocated to Chicago, where he performed with Otis Spann and Willie Love’s Three Aces. His discography includes the single “Memory of Sonny Boy” / “A Woman on Every Street” (1949), recorded for Aristocrat Records. He also recorded for the Atlantic label in 1959. Although his recording career was limited, Pugh was considered one of the top harmonica players of his era. The posthumous compilation Downhome Delta Harmonica (1995) features all of his recorded material. Pugh died in 1960.
