Biography
Feodor Ivanovich Chaliapin was born on February 1 (13), 1873 in Kazan, Russian Empire, and was a Russian opera and chamber singer. After vocal training with Dmitri Usatov, he moved to Tbilisi and performed at the Imperial Opera in Saint Petersburg in 1894, quickly gaining recognition for roles such as Mephistopheles in Faust and the title role in Borisâ¯Godunov. Chaliapinâs career expanded internationally from 1901, with a landmark appearance at La Scala and subsequent engagements at the Metropolitan Opera, where he returned in 1921 for eight seasons. Chaliapin received honors including the 1934 Commander of the Legion of Honor of France and a 1984 posthumous Hollywood Walk of Fame star. He died on April 12, 1938 in Paris.
