Biography
Sydney Alfred MacEwan (October 19, 1908 â September 25, 1991) was a Scottish tenor and priest from Glasgow. MacEwan performed traditional Scottish and Irish songs. MacEwan began a singing career while attending St Aloysius' College and later received professional advice from Sir Compton Mackenzie and John McCormack during university studies. MacEwan began recording for Parlophone in 1934 and undertook tours of Canada, the United States, New Zealand, and Australia between 1936 and 1938. MacEwan was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1944. Combining priesthood and music, MacEwan conducted international tours until 1956, donating concert earnings to charities and church building funds. Recordings include the albums Songs of Scotland and Ireland (1950), Christmas Carols (1956), and the collection The Great Scottish Tenor (1994). MacEwan authored the autobiography On the High C's (1973) and featured on the BBC programme This Is Your Life (1962). MacEwan died on September 25, 1991.
