Biography
Ernst Lewin-Wolf, also known as, Ernst Wolff, born March 1, 1905, in Baden-Baden, Germany, was a baritone singer and Kapellmeister. He began his musical career by studying music theory and piano at the Hochâsches Konservatorium under Bernhard Sekles and Ludwig Rottenberg. From 1925 to 1930, Wolff served as an opera and concert repetitor in Frankfurt. After the rise of the Nazi regime, he could only perform with the Jüdischer Kulturbund. Wolff emigrated to the USA in 1937, where he worked on Franz Werfel's The Eternal Road and later gave concerts across Europe post-1948. Notable recordings include works by Robert Franz, Clara Schumann, Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Liszt, Max Kowalskiâs "Pierrot Lunaire", and the Glogauer Liederbuch. Wolff received an honorary doctorate from Hamline University in 1951 and was awarded the Professor title by Frankfurt in 1962. He passed away on January 22, 1992, in Frankfurt am Main.
